Gemstone Care: Cleansing & Charging
Taking care of gemstones is actually quite simple. But, like many other things, you just need to know how. In this article, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about discharging (cleansing) and recharging gemstones!
Why is Proper Gemstone Care Important and How to Do It Effectively?
Gemstones each have their unique effects and qualities, but one commonality among all stones is that they emit (positive) energy into their surroundings. This energy can assist and support you in various aspects and themes of your life. Over time, this energy becomes depleted and needs to be replenished, a process known as 'charging.'
Additionally, many gemstones absorb (negative) energy from their surroundings. This energy needs regular cleansing and removal, referred to as 'discharging.'
For optimal effectiveness of your gemstones, it's essential to do this regularly. The frequency depends on how intensively the stone's energy is utilized. On average, 1 to 2 times a month is sufficient, but if you carry the stone with you frequently, it's best to do this at least once a week.
How to Discharge Gemstones and Recharge Gemstone Energy Effectively?
Charging and discharging gemstones can be done in various ways. It's crucial to check the description of the gemstone to determine the most suitable method. For instance, some gemstones might not tolerate water well or could discolor in intense (sun)light. We've listed the different methods available below for your convenience.
The Optimal Methods for Discharging Your Gemstones:
-
Hematite
The easiest and most effective method for discharging gemstones is by using Hematite. Hematite, an iron-rich stone, is self-cleansing, and as such, it hardly requires discharging. Place the gemstone in an Abalone shell alongside small Hematite stones. Allow the stone to rest for a minimum of 24 hours to ensure complete discharge. For instance, utilize the Gemstone discharge & recharge set in an Abalone shell. -
Water
A quick and easy method to cleanse gemstones is by holding the stone under lukewarm, running water for 5 minutes. This is one of the fastest cleansing methods, although not suitable for every type of stone.
For a more thorough cleansing with water, immerse the stone in a bowl of water for 24 hours. It's recommended to use spring water because the minerals in tap water might affect the stone. Additionally, it's wise to change the water multiple times during this process and avoid placing multiple stones in one bowl.

You can also cleanse gemstones using White Sage. To do this, burn the sage in a fireproof bowl or an Abalone shell, then pass the stones through the smoke. Another effective method is burning Palo Santo, also known as holy wood, and passing the stones through the smoke. Additionally, you can use other strongly scented incense for this purpose.
The Most Effective Methods for Recharging your Gemstones:
-
Clear Quartz
For almost all gemstones, recharging them with Clear Quartz (Rock Crystal) is considered the safest and most effective method. Fill an Abalone shell with Clear Quartz stones and place the gemstone you want to recharge on top for 24 hours. Easily order the Gemstone Discharge & Recharge Kit in an Abalone shell, which provides you with everything you need for discharging and recharging your gemstones all in one set. -
Moonlight
Charging stones in the (full) moonlight is a commonly practiced and effective method, especially suitable for more translucent stones. Simply place the stone outdoors under the light of the full moon, and by morning, the stone will be fully recharged. This method even works when the stones are placed behind glass, such as in a window frame. -
Sunlight
Some gemstones can be charged in the sun, operating similarly to charging them in moonlight. However, exercise caution, as not all stones are tolerant of sunlight. Some may discolor or even crack. Therefore, always refer to the comprehensive description of a gemstone to verify its suitability for charging in the sun. For instance, Amethyst, Aventurine, Aquamarine, and Rose Quartz are not suitable for sun charging. -
Earth
A commonly used and effective method to recharge stones is by placing them in the earth. Charging stones in the earth is a potent method that brings calmness to the stones, especially beneficial for those that have been through a lot. However, not all stones are suitable for this method, so always refer to the comprehensive description of a gemstone before using this technique.
